Great Song Durn

About the mic for home recordings you will do great with a short range dynamics microphone. XLR plugs in the mic and Jack probably if your sound card is any where near proffesional.
Short range dynamics is really convenient for home recording!

Good job on the song i can't help but hear that daftpunk Fleetwood mac influence
that is evolving into a more and more unique sound!

durn responds:

Aye, the Apogee Duet I bought has two XLR inputs for mic so I'm definitely in the market for one. Just using the USB one for now but not a big fan as I had to create an aggregate device, combining the duet and mic's inputs which is where some of the line squeals are coming from, I think.

I love fleetwood. I like the comparison. :D Thanks for takin' the time to review, IIPhase. :)

Great Atmosphere

It doesn't really come across as creepy to me.
I imagine a room with old wind up toys that come alive at night.
None of them are really happy because they have been replaced by better new toys. As if the modem or phone has given them just that little energy to be alive for one night...
It is wonderful!

It didn't need traditional instruments.
However

... I say "however," but I have nothing after that

SolusLunes responds:

That's a remarkably awesome image. :D

Good stuff

Try to get some reall brass for the beginning or at least brass from a good library.
This could be epic with the right virtual instruments.

I like it a lot

The bell sound to me is just a little bit to hard.
The chords you play later are loud to there for it overrides and makes it almost impossible to hear the chords as they should be heard.
Of course you know that it is not new wave :D
More drum and bass or industrial

if you put in drums in a song like this it is very important that together with the bass line they form the back bone of the song.
Meaning the drum and the bass line should be very solid and work together really well.
Another thing is the balance and the volume of the sounds.
They are all very hard in the mix.
Try this: set them lower so that they can be separated in the ears.
(Overriding sounds loose their detail.) Now when you have set the balance lower and have the sounds on a level that keeps them normal.
Try a limiter after that!
You will get the effect of loudness you are aiming for without over riding.
All is all the song has some interesting moods.
But you can get more out of this.
The style you have chosen i am really digging!
Some technicalities to work on :D
